BELAJAR KEPADA IBM

Why: Computing can transform infrastructure such as electric grids and traffic control systems.

Key innovation: Is drawing on its research expertise and that of software companies it's acquired to develop services for many infrastructure industries and expand the market for information technologies.

Technology:

IBM is bringing its computing resources and analytical expertise to bear on global energy problems such as how to integrate power generated from intermittent energy sources like wind and solar into the electrical grid and how to minimize congestion and delays in air, rail, and road transportation systems to conserve billions of gallons of fuels each year.

Market:

Government mandates around the world call for an increasing share of electricity to be generated from renewable sources, but meeting this goal will require utilities and grid operators to develop technologies for integrating that power into the grid.

Strategy:

The company has developed a system that uses short-range weather forecasting and analytics software to help grid operators predict the output of wind farms and plan accordingly, rather than having to respond to drastic changes in load as they occur. Its traffic management software has helped ease congestion in cities including Stockholm, London, and Singapore. Its energy management software has helped cut energy costs at its own manufacturing and computing facilities, and it is now marketing this software to other companies.

Challenges and Next Steps:

In an initiative called the Smarter Cities Challenge, launched last fall, IBM will donate $50 million worth of technology and services to 100 cities around the world to help them collect and analyze data on urban systems in order to improve services and cut costs.

Semoga di Masa Depan Ada Perusahaan Sekelas IBM Lahir di Kota Bandung ini
Aamiin
