Free video lectures are a great way to learn more about a particular subject because you don't have to put a lot of effort into doing so. There are currently dozens of top universities that provide free video lectures to self-learners around the world. Here's a list of the best.

1. The University Channel (princeton.edu)

The University Channel is a Princeton University initiative that makes lecture videos from academic institutions all over the world available to the public. The focus of most of the lectures is public and international affairs, but there really is something for everyone at this site.

2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (mit.edu)

MIT offers more free audio and video lectures than any other university. Lecture topics cover everything from architecture and science to history and writing. More than 1,000 lectures in all.

3. Harvard (harvard.edu)

Harvard offers high-caliber web videos from Harvard@Home, Harvard School of Public Health and the Kennedy School of Government. Videos cover a range of subjects, including science, history, current affairs, the arts, literature and math.

4. UCLA (ucla.edu)

UCLA provides webcasts of courses and lectures. Some of the webcasts can only be viewed by students and faculty, but there are a wide variety of videos that can be accessed by the general public.

5. University of California, Berkeley (berkeley.edu)

UC Berkeley offers webcasts and podcasts of current and archived courses and events. Videos are available for live viewing or on-demand replay and cover nearly every topic imaginable.

6. Yale (yale.edu)

Yale has a huge collection of podcasts, video clips, flash presentations and slide shows available through various university sites. Topics include everything from public and international affairs to science and religion.

7. Columbia University (columbia.edu)

The Columbia Interactive site from Columbia University offers webcasts, e-seminars, and much more. Video lectures cover a broad range of topics.

8. University of Oxford (ox.ac.uk)

The Oxford Internet Institute publishes streaming webcasts of scholars, regulators, Internet entrepreneurs and other lectures on their website. The webcasts cover subjects like regulation, online security, Internet journalism and social media.

9. Stanford Graduate School of Business (standford.edu)

The video lectures offered through the Stanford School of Business feature Stanford faculty members discussing hot topics, such as leadership, diversity, social innovation and networking. Most are available to the public, but access is restricted to alumni in a few cases.

10. University of Southern Carolina (sc.edu)

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine offers more than 80 video lectures on medical microbiology and immunology. The audio-video slide shows can also be downloaded as mp3 files.
