R E S E N S I

Payton (Dennis Quaid) dan Bower (Ben Foster) merupakan dua orang astronot yang sedang bertugas di sebuah pesawat ruang angkasa. Mereka berdua terbangun dari kondisi hybernate dan menyadari bahwa mereka berdua tak ingat apa pun yang terjadi sebelumnya.

Dalam kebingungan mereka menyimpulkan bahwa hanya mereka berdualah yang tertinggal di pesawat yang seolah ditinggalkan itu. Tidak tahu arah yang dituju pesawat mereka dan dari mana mereka berasal, Payton dan Bower lantas berusaha menyelidiki apa yang sebenarnya terjadi pada pesawat dan kru yang lain. Satu-satunya cara menyelidiki hanyalah dengan cara menelusuri lorong saluran udara yang menghubungkan ruang mereka dengan ruangan-ruangan lain.

Satu-satunya alat komunikasi yang bisa mereka gunakan hanyalah radio komunikasi yang tertinggal di sana. Semakin jauh Bower, semakin terungkap pula misteri hilangnya ingatan mereka dan apa yang sebenarnya telah terjadi pada pesawat mereka?

Plot

 

Corporal Bower (Ben Foster) wakes up from hypersleep by a power surge to find himself alone, with no memory of who he is or what happened to the crew of the 60,000-passenger sleeper ship Elysium. Another power surge manages to awaken Lieutenant Payton (Dennis Quaid) who is also suffering from amnesia. They are unable either to access the ship's bridge or to communicate with anyone else, including the three-man flight crew team that they are supposed to relieve. With the ship wracked by power surges from a failing reactor, Bower assumes that he must be a technician automatically awakened by the principal on-board computer in order to effect repairs.

Bower begins exploring the spacecraft under Payton's radio guidance to reboot the reactor and find his wife. Noticing odd physical symptoms, Bower talks with Payton about Pandorum, a psychological condition brought on by extended periods of deep-space travel (similar to cabin fever) and hypersleep. Its symptoms and effects include severe paranoia, vivid hallucinations, and epistaxis. Payton recounts the story of another ship called the Eden, whose Captain went insane and became convinced that the ship was cursed, so he jettisoned 5000 hibernating passengers casting them out into space to their death.

As Bower continues searching the ship he encounters dead bodies, fast-moving humanoid tribal creatures (dubbed Hunters), and a non-lethal (but deadly up close, according to Payton) riot control energy projectile weapon which he uses. Escaping from one of the creatures, he encounters other amnesia suffering survivors: Manh (Cung Le), a Vietnamese man working in Agriculture, and Nadia (Antje Traue), a German genetic engineer safeguarding millions of samples of plant and animal life from Earth. Following a struggle, Bower convinces them to assist him.

On the flight deck, Payton discovers another crew member, Corporal Gallo (Cam Gigandet), who reveals that he was part of the flight crew that received the final message from Earth. He claims that his other two crew mates suffered from an onset of Pandorum, and that he had to kill them in self-defense. Payton is wary of Gallo, noting his strange behavior.

During their journey to the reactor Bower and his allies enter the hunter's main hunting ground. There Bower and Nadia fall into a pool filled with skeletons and blood of the hunter's prey. After exiting the pool the three manage to get into a savage fight with one of the creatures. After killing the cannibal the three noticed the leader of hunters was watching the battle. The leader then gives the group time to run and the hunters feed on the corpse of the fallen beast.

Bower, Manh, and Nadia run into the lair of Leland (Eddie Rouse) who has been awake for years. When asked what the creatures were Nadia postulates that they are passengers that mutated due to an enzyme that was given to them in their feeding tubes that was intended to accelerate evolution so that their bodies may adapt to living conditions on Tanis, but instead have adapted to the ship and believes that they have been asleep longer than they thought for this to be possible.

Leland overhearing then tells what happened on the ship from what he heard from other members, with the etchings on the walls of his lair depicting the events. Suffering from massive overpopulation, Earth launched the Elysium on a 123-year voyage to an Earth-like planet called Tanis to create a settlement. When the ship received a message of Earth's destruction, conflict had happened between the crew leaving only one alive described as both God and the Devil (Gallo), with he etchings depicting him with lightning bolts around his head and blood around his nose suggesting that he had developed Pandorum.

A group of talented but rebellious ‘rock-star scientists’ find themselves in a race against time to save Earth when numerous black holes show up around the world sucking in everything in their path. The black holes create earthquakes and unexpected twisters around the globe and alter the gravity, making it easy to pick up heavy objects such as cars, the only salvation being a man with autism who knows how to stop the phenomenon from destroying our planet.

Plot

 

During routine administration at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, Dr. Rhodes discovers that a comet has suddenly veered off its orbit and smashed into Mars. The explosion causes debris to travel towards Earth with the possibility of causing an extinction level event. At Ben Marshall's house, Ben refuses to give his son, Leo, a ride as he complained his own car smelled of mildew. However, Ben drives Leo to school and discovers Leo is in love with a fellow student, Lindsey. Leo is chatting with Lindsey when her ex-boyfriend, Sean, gives them threatening looks.

Terry, Ben's autistic brother, refuses to let Samantha, Ben's daughter, take the school bus, which is having mechanical problems. Lynne, Ben's wife, comes home to discover that and drives Samantha to school. They are caught in a traffic jam caused by an incident involving the school bus.

After discovering that an anomaly in space could have pulled the comet off orbit with its strong gravitational pull and that this anomaly is possibly reaching or bypassing Earth, they contact physicists, Trish Zane and Tom Lively, to help to prevent it. They discover that the anomaly is a strangelet, and it is traveling towards earth. The Russian and Chinese decide to fire nuclear missiles at the North Pole to cause a polar shift, hoping to resolve the issue. The polar shift triggers chain reactions which cause earthquakes, typhoons and tropical storms, which destroy New York (The city of New York is annihilated when a massive tsunami washes right over the city, destroying buildings and killing thousands), London, and other cities in the process.

Ben brings Leo and Lindsey home after he receives news about the anomaly. They hide safely in the basement when a tornado struck, destroying the neighborhood. Terry convinces both Ben and Lynne that he has a solution to the problem. Ben drives Terry to the Space Center in Houston while Lynne takes Leo, Lindsey, and Samantha to the rescue center. Leo and Lindsey leave the center to search for Lindsey's family.

They discover Sean and his friends raiding a house. Sean fatally shoots Leo in the midst of an argument and attempts to rape Lindsey. Lynne, worried that Leo and Lindsey are not back, goes to find them and rescues Lindsey. However, the house they were in is sucked away due to the effect of the strangelet nearing Earth.

Along the way to Houston, Ben and Terry encounter a broken down vehicle. While trying to help, Ben is attacked but Terry takes out the attacker and they continue on their way. Ben suffers a heart attack but they manage to reach the Space Center. They gain entry because Terry knows Dr. Rhodes's verbal password. Terry manages to convince Dr. Rhodes of his calculations, which was shown to be accurate. Ben dies from his heart attack.

After launching the nuclear missiles via LGM-118 Peacekeeper at the strangelet, time is reversed back to the starting of the film and Ben is shown to be much kinder to Terry and Leo.

Membangun Perusahaan-perusahaan IT di Indonesia

Information technology (IT) is "the acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of vocal, pictorial, textual and numerical information by a microelectronics-based combination of computing and telecommunications". The term in its modern sense first appeared in a 1958 article published in the Harvard Business Review, in which authors Leavitt and Whisler commented that "the new technology does not yet have a single established name. We shall call it information technology."

IT spans wide variety of areas that include but are not limited to things such as processes, computer software, computer hardware, programming languages, and data constructs. In short, anything that renders data, information or perceived knowledge in any visual format whatsoever, via any multimedia distribution mechanism, is considered part of the domain space known as Information Technology (IT).

IT professionals perform a variety of functions (IT Disciplines/Competencies) that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases. A few of the duties that IT professionals perform may include data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as management and administration of entire systems. Information technology is starting to spread farther than the conventional personal computer and network technology, and more into integrations of other technologies such as the use of cell phones, televisions, automobiles, and more, which is increasing the demand for such jobs.

In the recent past, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and the Association for Computing Machinery have collaborated to form accreditation and curriculum standards for degrees in Information Technology as a distinct field of study as compared to Computer Science and Information Systems today. SIGITE is the ACM working group for defining these standards. The Worldwide IT services revenue totaled $763 billion in 2009.

Akhir-akhir ini banyak orang berbicara tentang entrepreneurship. Mahasiswa digiring untuk menidirikan usaha sendiri dengan iming-iming menjadi Bill Gates kedua. Apakah semudah itu? Jika memang semudah itu, mengapa kita belum mendengar cerita sukesnya? Tulisan ini mencoba menceritakan suka dukanya membuat usaha sendiri, atau yang dikenal dengan istilah mendirikan start-up. Tulisan ini berdasarkan kepada pengalaman penulis yang mungkin tidak dapat digeneralisir menjadi kaidah umum dalam perjalanan mendirikan perusahan. Fokusnya di dunia peranti lunak memang tak tergoyahkan. Sepanjang hidupnya, fokus bisnisnya hanya di satu bidang ini — atau yang berkaitan dengan peranti lunak, jasa dan solusi. Ia tak pernah menoleh sedikitpun ke bidang lain. 

Pria kelahiran 28 Oktober 1955 ini mampu membangun Micrsoft dari titik nol menjadi perusahaan dengan penjualan sebesar US$ 51,12 miliar alias sekitar Rp 500 triliun pada tahun fiskal Juni 2007. Itu artinya hampir setara dengan 70% belanja negara kita tahun ini.

Melalui payung Microsoft pula ia mampu menampung 78 ribu tenaga kerja yang tersebar di 105 negara. Melalui Microsoft pula ia mendominasi pasar peranti lunak dunia.

For the 2010 fiscal year, Microsoft had five product divisions: Windows & Windows Live Division, Server and Tools, Online Services Division, Microsoft Business Division, and Entertainment and Devices Division.

Windows & Windows Live Division, Server and Tools, Online Services Division

The company's Client division produces the flagship Windows OS line such as Windows 7; it also produces the Windows Live family of products and services. Server and Tools produces the server versions of Windows, such as Windows Server 2008 R2 as well as a set of development tools called Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft Silverlight, a web application framework, and Systems Management Server, a collection of tools providing remote-control abilities, patch management, software distribution and a hardware/software inventory. Other server products include: Microsoft SQL Server, a relational database management system, Microsoft Exchange Server, for certain business-oriented e-mail and scheduling features, Small Business Server, for messaging and other small business-oriented features; and Microsoft BizTalk Server, for business process management.


Microsoft provides IT consulting ("Microsoft Consulting Services") and produces a set of certification programs handled by the Server and Tools division designed to recognize individuals who have a minimal set of proficiencies in a specific role; this includes developers ("Microsoft Certified Solution Developer"), system/network analysts ("Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer"), trainers ("Microsoft Certified Trainers") and administrators ("Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator" and "Microsoft Certified Database Administrator"). Microsoft Press, which publishes books, is also managed by the division. The Online Services Business division handles the online service MSN and the search engine Bing. As of December 2009, the company also possesses an 18% ownership of the cable news channel MSNBC without any editorial control; however, the division develops the channel's website, msnbc.com, in a joint venture with the channel's co-owner, NBC Universal.

The Microsoft Business Division produces Microsoft Office including Microsoft Office 2010, the company's line of office software. The software product includes Word (a word processor), Access (a relational database program), Excel (a spreadsheet program), Outlook (Groupware, frequently used with Exchange Server), PowerPoint (presentation software), and Publisher (desktop publishing software). A number of other products were added later with the release of Office 2003 including Visio, Project, MapPoint, InfoPath and OneNote.

The division also develops enterprise resource planning (ERP) software for companies under the Microsoft Dynamics brand. These include: Microsoft Dynamics AX, Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Microsoft Dynamics GP, and Microsoft Dynamics SL. They are targeted at varying company types and countries, and limited to organizations with under 7,500 employees.^[49] Also included under the Dynamics brand is the customer relationship management software Microsoft Dynamics CRM, part of the Azure Services Platform.

Entertainment and Devices Division

The Entertainment and Devices Division produces the Windows CE OS for embedded systems and Windows Phone 7 for smartphones.^[50] Microsoft initially entered the mobile market through Windows CE for handheld devices, eventually developing into the Windows Mobile OS and now, Windows Phone 7. Windows CE is designed for devices where the OS may not directly be visible to the end user, in particular, appliances and cars.

The division also produces computer games that run on Windows PCs and other systems including titles such as Age of Empires, Halo and the Microsoft Flight Simulator series as well as a line of reference works that include encyclopedias and atlases, under the name Encarta, and houses the Macintosh Business Unit which produces Mac OS software including Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac.

Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division designs, markets, and manufactures consumer electronics including the Xbox 360 game console, the handheld Zune media player, and the television-based Internet appliance MSN TV. Microsoft also markets personal computer hardware including mice, keyboards, and various game controllers such as joysticks and gamepads.

Edutainment (also Info-tainment or entertainment-education) is a form of entertainment designed to educate as well as to amuse.

Overview

It can be argued that edutainment has existed for millennia in the form of parables and fables that promoted social change.

Modern forms include television productions, film, museum exhibits, and computer software which use entertainment to attract and maintain an audience, while incorporating deliberate educational content or messages.

Since the 1970s, various groups in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Latin America have used edutainment to address such health and social issues as substance abuse, immunization, teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and cancer. Initiatives in major universities, such as Johns Hopkins University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, NGOs such as PCI-Media Impact, and government agencies such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) have produced edutainment content.

One form of edutainment popular in Latin America is the educational telenovela. Miguel Sabido, a producer of telenovelas from the 1970s on, has combined communication theory with pro-health/education messages to educate audiences throughout Latin America about family planning, literacy, and other topics. He developed a model which incorporated the work of Albert Bandura and other theorists, as well as research to determine whether programs impacted audience behavior.

In a futuristic world, Michelle lives everyday battling with DNA Hackers who use their skills to hack into people's bodies and kill them. She is an assassin, battling her past demons and trying to keep her younger and extroverted brother, Jackie, out of trouble. When Jackie gets involved in a petty crime of robbery, he propels himself into the world of DNA Hackers, Shylocks (Loan Sharks) and Gang Fights. Wanting the respect that the world has never given to him only makes it harder for Jackie to peel himself away from the underground trades, against the hopes of his sister, Michelle. Michelle always wanted to leave the city and lead a calm and quiet lifestyle. As emotions and gunfire get into the way, Michelle and Jackie soon find themselves battling between their lives and finding out that in an immoral world, love can still survive; and that blood is thicker than water.

Dalam tahap paling dini gagasan BHTV telah muncul dari pemikiran pakar ilmuwan senior Dr.Semaun Samadikun dan Dr. Iskandar Alisjahbana – mantan rektor ITB – sejak tahun 1970-an atau setelah terjadinya boom industri IC yang menghasilkan pertumbuhan kemakmuran luar biasa di Silicon Valley,CA.

Secara formal gagasan ini lalu dikemukakan oleh Deperindag bersama pakar ITB tahun 1996 setelah menelaah secara seksama peluang dan potensi nyata implementasi BHTV. Bahkan berdasar acuan hasil ekspor rata-rata produk elektronika nasional senilai $ 2-3 milyar per tahun, lalu diproyeksikan bahwa Indonesia berpeluang menggaet ekspor sampai senilai $ 30 milyar tahun 2010 (Angka ini hasil revisi dari $ 40 milyar untuk target tahun 2006 berhubung terjadinya krisis moneter 1998).

Secara fisik BHTV meliputi poros Bandung – Padalarang – Purwakarta – Cikampek – Jakarta – dan Cilegon, yakni meliputi jaringan transportasi dan zoning kawasan industri. Itulah sebabnya dalam penetapan kebijakannya pada level Pemerintahan Pusat membutuhan semacam “political will” guna merealisasikan konsep BHTV dengan mantap, untuk selanjutnya ditindaklanjuti dengan koordinasi yang sinkron pada level Pemerintahan Daerah maupun inter-departemental.

Pada tahun 1995-an contoh keberhasilan pembangunan semacam “Silicon Valley ala Negara Dunia Ketiga” telah ditunjukkan dengan baik di Bangalore-India, Malaysia Multimedia Super Corridor-Kuala Lumpur ataupun Manila Gateway Park-Filipina. Untuk itu perlulah para pembuat keputusan di Pemerintahan maupun wakil rakyat yang duduk di Legislatif dapat mengkaji secara obyektif mengenai potensi dan urgensi BHTV dalam tempo yang sesingkat-singkatnya. Jangan sampai Indonesia terlambat melewatkan momentum peluang yang sesungguhnya sangat berarti bagi peningkatan ekonomi khususnya di kawasan Bandung Raya dan sekitarnya.

Nilai Lebih dan Bukti Potensi BHTV , yaitu :

1. Potensi nyata atau REAL untuk Industri berbasis teknologi dalam bidang Elektronika dan IT berupa pasar global senilai $ 3 triliun s/d tahun 2003 dengan tingkat pertumbuhan per tahun 12%-15%. Negara produsen baru seperti India, Filipina, Malaysia, dan Indonesia – belum terlambat jika segera masuk – masih memiliki kesempatan untuk bersaing untuk merebut pasar cukup sampai 1 %- 2,5 % atau setara 30 M – 70 M US$.

   Sebagai bukti : Produk sektor elektronik Nasional selama 5 tahun ini selalu masuk dalam 3 besar ekspor nasional selain kayu olahan dan tekstil, bahkan juga sewaktu dalam masa krisis moneter 1998/1999.
2. Adanya sumber daya manusia Indonesia yang berpotensi tinggi. Buktinya walau belum bersifat migrasi massal ternyata secara perorangan telah cukup banyak tenaga profesional ahli IT & Elektronika Indonesia yang mampu menembus pasar kerja kelas dunia raksasa industri IT langsung di pusat lokasi Silicon Valley macam Microsoft, Compaq, Sun Microsystem, dll. Beberapa riset mutakhir Lab PPAU Mikroelektronik ITB Bandung , dengan dorongan kemajuan dunia Internet, juga telah mampu membuktikan kemampuan rancangan perangkat hardware kelas dunia. Sementara sekelompok profesional IT nasional di Bali Camp juga telah mampu menghasilkan perangkat softwareyang terpakai oleh industri kelas dunia.
3. ITB di Bandung sebagai Perguruan Tinggi unggulan bidang teknologi – ranking 15 terbaik di Asia untuk 1999 versi Asia Week- menjadi suatu bukti.

   Sayangnya -diakui ataupun tidak- telah lama potensi keunggulan SDM ITB sering diabaikan terutama oleh Pemda setempat. Rencana BHTV tidak boleh lagi membiarkan kondisi seperti itu, karena jika mengambil konsepsi pengembangan semacam Silicon Valley maka fungsi Universitas sebagai motor penggerak “science based city” dan “centre of excellence” dalam bidang teknologi dan kewiraswastaan (business entrepreneurships)- menjadi faktor terdepan. Dalam hal ini ITB berperan bagai Stanford University bagi Silicon Valley. ITB tentu tidak berjalan sendiri melainkan ditunjang pula oleh Perguruan Tinggi lainnya di Bandung dan Jakarta, disamping peranan aktif R&D Industri yang telah ada di Bandung.

Bisnis industri berbasis teknologi dan IT ternyata memiliki karakteristik tertentu yang memungkinkan negara dunia ketiga seperti Indonesia masih dapat mengambil kesempatan dalam porsi yang memadai. Karakteristik bisnis industri berbasis Teknologi dan IT yang disebut bisnis “new economy“, yakni bahwa seluk beluk bisnis dan keuntungan investasi yang akan terjadi sebenarnya masih belum dapat tepat diproyeksikan berdasar teori bisnis yang dikenal selama ini. Bisnis dunia digital ini juga memiliki paradigma baru tersendiri mengenai dimensi waktu dalam tahapan perencanaan usaha sampai produksi. Sebagai contoh apabila pada dunia bisnis yang konvesional pebisnis menghitung perencanaan bisnis jangka panjang (long term) dalam hitungan kurun waktu 10 – 15 tahun, maka pada bisnis dunia digital jangka waktu untuk hal yang sama tersebut hitungannya hanya valid dalam jangka waktu cukup singkat 3 tahunan saja.

Gambaran menarik dipaparkan sumber “Business Week” edisi Juli 1999 yang mengamatiMarket Value berbagai perusahaan kelas dunia menunjukkan bahwa industri yang berbasis Teknologi bermunculan dalam posisi teratas, misalnya Microsoft yang berada di urutan puncak. IBM berada di posisi 3, sementara AT&T, Intel, Cisco System juga berada di posisi 10 besar! Perusahaan berbasis teknologi tersebut dalam usia yang terhitung singkat mampu menggeser perusahaan mapan seperti WalMart, Exxon, Shell, dll yang kebanyakan telah beroperasi lebih dari satu generasi!

2. 1. Fenomena menarik lainnya dari karakteristik usaha berbasis teknologi IT bahwa pada awal model pengembangan di Silicon Valley, California yakni sifat utama bisnis adalah basis “knowledge” sebagai modal utama dan sama sekali bukan modal uang yang utama!

   1. Investasi untuk bisnis umumnya didukung oleh modal ventura, yaitu pemodal yang memasok dana investasi yang nantinya lalu dikonversikan menjadi kepemilikan saham perusahaan. Atau cara lainnya dengan mengajukan penawaran saham publik di Pasar Modal. Start-up usaha bisnis juga umumnya selalu dimulai oleh sekelompok kecil profesional muda yang bermodal kemampuan otak disertai bekal wiraswasta yang tinggi. Hal demikian secara tidak langsung telah menunjukkan kesesuaian dengan sifat dunia model industri Usaha Kecil Menengah yang kini sedang digalakkan pengembangannya.

3. Industri berbasis teknologi IT ini memiliki keunggulan yakni relatif bebas polusi hingga tidak merugikan berupa adanya dampak cemaran industri tekstil yang menjadi andalan Bandung selama ini.
