Edutainment (also Info-tainment or entertainment-education) is a form of entertainment designed to educate as well as to amuse.

Overview

It can be argued that edutainment has existed for millennia in the form of parables and fables that promoted social change.

Modern forms include television productions, film, museum exhibits, and computer software which use entertainment to attract and maintain an audience, while incorporating deliberate educational content or messages.

Since the 1970s, various groups in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Latin America have used edutainment to address such health and social issues as substance abuse, immunization, teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and cancer. Initiatives in major universities, such as Johns Hopkins University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, NGOs such as PCI-Media Impact, and government agencies such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) have produced edutainment content.

One form of edutainment popular in Latin America is the educational telenovela. Miguel Sabido, a producer of telenovelas from the 1970s on, has combined communication theory with pro-health/education messages to educate audiences throughout Latin America about family planning, literacy, and other topics. He developed a model which incorporated the work of Albert Bandura and other theorists, as well as research to determine whether programs impacted audience behavior.

In a futuristic world, Michelle lives everyday battling with DNA Hackers who use their skills to hack into people's bodies and kill them. She is an assassin, battling her past demons and trying to keep her younger and extroverted brother, Jackie, out of trouble. When Jackie gets involved in a petty crime of robbery, he propels himself into the world of DNA Hackers, Shylocks (Loan Sharks) and Gang Fights. Wanting the respect that the world has never given to him only makes it harder for Jackie to peel himself away from the underground trades, against the hopes of his sister, Michelle. Michelle always wanted to leave the city and lead a calm and quiet lifestyle. As emotions and gunfire get into the way, Michelle and Jackie soon find themselves battling between their lives and finding out that in an immoral world, love can still survive; and that blood is thicker than water.

Entertainment-Education uses a blend of core communication theories and fundamental entertainment pedagogy to guide the preparation of the programming. Additionally the CDC has a tip sheet available on its website that provides additional guidance for writers and producers.^[2]

The major communication theories that influence Entertainment-Education include:

• Persuasion Theory: (Aristotle, Petty, Cacioppo) Psychological characteristics affect the response of a person to messages.^[3] Also indicates the message and source factors that influence a person's response such as the credibility, attractiveness, and expertise of the source.
• Theory of Reasoned Action: (Ajzen, Fishbein) Social influences affect behavior, including beliefs and perceived social norms.^[4]
• Social Learning Theory: (Bandura) People learn by observing others and the consequences of their behavior. If the person so chooses, they then emulate the behavior by rehearsing the action, taking action, comparing their experiences to the experiences of others, and then adopting the new behavior.^[5]
• Diffusion Theory: (Rogers) Behavior spreads through a community or group over a period of time. Television may plant the idea, but social networks reinforce it and cause it to grow.^[6]

Pedagogy involved with Entertainment-Education include:

• Relevance: Learning is more likely when people can see the usefulness of the knowledge they are given.
• Incremental Learning: Learning is most effective when people can learn at their own pace.
• Distributed Learning: (Fossard) Different people learn in different ways over different periods of time. It is important to present information differently so that people can absorb it

R E S E N S I

James Tiberius Kirk (Chris Pine) dan Spock (Zachary Quinto) adalah dua karakter yang berseberangan. Kirk adalah pemuda dengan jiwa pemberontak sementara Spock tak pernah melakukan hal yang tak logis namun takdir mempertemukan mereka berdua dan bahkan keduanya menjadi sahabat sekaligus tim yang sangat solid.

Kirk yang sejak lahir telah ditinggal mati oleh ayahnya tumbuh menjadi pemuda liar sampai akhirnya ia bertemu Kapten Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) yang menyarankan Kirk untuk bergabung dalam akademi Starfleet dan melanjutkan jejak ayahnya sebagai seorang kapten pesawat angkasa luar. Merasa tertantang, Kirk pun memutuskan untuk bergabung dengan Starfleet. Di akademi inilah ia kemudian bertemu dengan Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban) yang lantas menjadi sahabat baik Kirk.

Suatu ketika, Starfleet menerima pesan darurat dari planet Vulcan dan segera saja beberapa armada pesawat ruang angkasa dikirim untuk memberikan bantuan. Kirk yang diskors tak boleh bergabung namun dengan bantuan McCoy, Kirk berhasil masuk ke dalam pesawat USS Enterprise. Saat mendekat Vulcan, Kirk baru sadar bahwa semua itu jebakan dan ia berusaha meyakinkan kapten Pike bahwa yang terjadi adalah serangan terhadap planet Vulcan.

Dalam serangan itu Kapten Pike disandera oleh Kapten Nero (Eric Bana) sementara seluruh planet Vulcan musnah termasuk ibu Spock yang gagal diselamatkan. Kirk pun lantas terlibat perseteruan dengan Spock yang menjabat sebagai kapten kapal menggantikan Pike. Perseteruan ini membuat Spock terpaksa membuang Kirk dari USS Enterprise. Terdampar di Delta Vega, Kirk akhirnya malah menemukan satu pencerahan yang akan menjadi kunci penyelamatan bumi dari dendam Kapten Nero.

R E V I E W

Di masa depan, orang tak lagi senang berinteraksi dengan sesama manusia. Sebagai gantinya, mereka menggunakan robot yang mewakili mereka untuk saling berhubungan dengan manusia lain. Orang memilih tinggal di rumah sementara robot mereka yang bekerja menggantikan mereka. Tentu saja tak semua orang senang dengan budaya baru ini.

Suatu ketika, terjadi kasus pembunuhan terhadap seorang mahasiswa yang juga adalah penemu dari robot yang menggantikan fungsi manusia ini. Seorang polisi yang diperankan oleh Bruce Willis mengambil tugas untuk menyelidiki kasus pembunuhan misterius ini, tentu saja dengan menggunakan robot yang mewakili tugasnya sebagai polisi.

Namun saat kasus ini mulai menjadi semakin pelik, polisi ini mulai menemukan satu teori bahwa satu-satunya cara menemukan sang pembunuh adalah dengan menghadapi sendiri kasus ini tanpa bantuan robot. Ia pun kemudian meminta bantuan dari polisi lain yang diperankan oleh Radha Mitchell. Kini kedua polisi ini harus benar-benar turun ke jalan, sesuatu yang telah lama mereka tinggalkan, untuk membongkar kasus kejahatan ini.
